Spanish Springs managed to knock off Reno, 26-24, 25-22, 22-25, 26-24 in the High Desert League opener for both prep volleyball teams. The match was originally scheduled for the week of the WCSD's new fall break in mid-October so the two schools agreed to move the match and keep the break open.

"It definitely was good to get a win," Spanish Springs coach Frank Sandomenico said. "It feels like we just grinded another one out. At the end of the day, I'm happy to get a win but I've never been so frustrated with myself and our team. But the team did find a way to get a win and stick together.

"Personally, I think the time for coaches to get mad is during practice and not in games and I didn't live by that tonight, so I'm frustrated with myself. And then with our team, I'm frustrated because I think we've got half of our team doing it's own thing and the other half is confused. We're not on the same page, not even close."

Despite the Cougars' coach's frustrations, his team still put up some good numbers.

Middle blockers Gabby Szachara and Madison McCusker owned the net for the SSHS spikers. Szachara finished with 15 kills and six blocks. McCusker chipped in eight kills and four blocks.

Brandi Brucato lifted 18 digs and served up a trio aces for the Cougars while Hannah Meadows gave away 30 assists, put down eight kills and also turned in three aces.

"We have got the athletes to improve, but we have to get people buying in and not doing their own thing," Sandomenico said.

Next up for Spanish Springs (6-2, 1-0 HDL), Nevada's defending large-school champion, is the Carmichael Invitational in Sacramento Saturday.
