Despite those numbers, many women do not get mammograms due to a lack of funds and insurance. On Tuesday, the traveling Nevada Health Centers’ (NHC) Mammovan will be in Sparks, offering mammograms to both insured and uninsured women.
“For some women, we are their only source of care,” said Tami Wells, the Mammovan’s Community Outreach Coordinator. “These women depend on us.”
From 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., the Mammovan will be at Nevada Summit Racing Equipment at 960 E. Glendale Ave. Women 40 years of age and older are encouraged to call the NHC hotline to see if they qualify for the low-cost mammogram and to make an appointment. To qualify onsite, women must bring proof of income, proof of address and proof of dependency. Medicaid, Medicare and most insurances are accepted, as well as cash and credit cards.
The NHC Mammovan’s efforts stretch across Nevada as it travels to rural communities that do not have access to proper healthcare. “We spend about 12 days in Northern Nevada, reaching out as far as Jackpot to help those who need it,” said Wells.
Funded by state grants and donations, NHC provides low-cost affordable healthcare to the uninsured and underinsured, offering services at the sliding scale cost.
“We’re passionate about breast cancer awareness, screening and early detection,” said Wells. “We want to make sure that Nevada women are healthy.”
