On June 22, Mira Loma Skate Park will be home to the 2nd Annual “Making the Grade” Scholastic & Amateur Skate Contest.

Students from schools in any northern Nevada school district are welcome to showcase their skills in the free amateur skate competition put on by local dentist and philanthropist Dr. David M. White.

“I started this event because of my passion for both areas, action sports and education,” Dr. White said. “I grew up in the community and was able to maximize opportunities and came back to Nevada after dental school committed to helping do my part to improve education in the state of Nevada.”

Last year, 60 participants competed in the inaugural event.

One boy and one girl who place first in each of the three age groups receive tuition for a week-long trip to Woodward’s Skate Camp in Lake Tahoe, a $1,099 value.

The Woodward Skate Camp helps camp goers learn new skills and develop confidence in skateboarding and their lives. The winners of the skate contest will be put in groups at the Woodward Skate Camp based on their age and skill level.

The competition begins at 10 a.m. All participants must be 7-18 years of age. Judges include Steve “O” Brockway of World Cup Skateboarding.

The contest is open to students from any school in the Washoe County, Carson City, Douglas County, Lyon County, Storey County and Elko County school districts. All participants must submit their official grade report or have a teacher sign their application verifying GPA by 9.a.m. the day of the event. Each participants’ final grades that are submitted before the competition will be factored into their final score in the skate competition, allowing for education to play a key role in the competition.

Along with the competition, there will be skate demos by Reno’s Eternal Skate Team, a swag toss, food and prizes. All competitors receive a free t-shirt.
