Steampunk Exposition & Rail City Showdown this weekend

SPARKS — High Desert Steam will hold its Second Annual Steampunk Exposition and Rail City Showdown from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sparks Heritage Museum, located at 814 Victorian Ave. in Sparks.

The event will feature:

•A grand shopping bazaar of the West’s best vendors’ handmade steampunk, costume and antique wares.

•Interactive classes on Steampunk costume making, including demonstrations and hands on workshops.

•The first ever Tea Duel Invitational Tournament between steam organizations.

•Steampunk’s spectacle of fashion parade and show along the historic train platform.

•Stilt-walkers, fortune tellers and a sneak preview of the costumed characters who will be taking over Virginia City this fall during “Masked Madness on the Comstock.”

The following vendors will participate: The Melting Pot; Poly Esther’s; Henna Blessings; Spoonfest; Kostoom Arts; Clockwork Monster; Bubbly Creations; Scarlet NPG; Megan Jewett; Creative Addictions; BHK Arts; and Mrs. Beasley’s.

High Desert Steam is a local costume enthusiast organization that produces the annual Steampunk Victorian Ball at Pipers Opera House in Virginia City. This year’s ball will be held on Sept. 14. The organization also holds an annual costume-themed charity event and marches in several local parades. High Desert Steam received “Best Costumed Group” Award in the 2012 Sparks Hometown Christmas Parade.
